Vikings Crush Bobcats

September 4, 2008
By iHigh Staff of Cass Midway High School

Cass Midway's 2008 football season got started with a 52-0 win over the Drexel Bobcats, Friday, August 29 at Drexel. The final score indicates a one-sided Viking victory, but Midway head coach Larry Burchett was less than enthused with his team's performance.

"We had a solid defensive effort, but we were not good as we should have been on the offensive side of the ball," said Coach Burchett. "We have a lot of talent in our offensive backfield, but it's hard to get rolling if we don't do a better job up front. Our backs and ends need to do a better job of blocking as well."

Sam Riggs was the first Viking to score in the 2008 season. Sam ran for a 1yard Viking touchdown at 7:30 of the first quarter. He also kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Midway lead.

Midway's next score came at 2:25 of the first quarter. Cody Foreman connected with Shane Henry on an 11 yard touchdown pass. The try for point failed leaving the score Vikings 13 and Bobcats 0.

Lane Hall added to the Viking lead at 9:33 of the second quarter on a 3 yard touchdown run. Another unsuccessful try for point made the score Midway 19 and Drexel 0. Ten seconds later (9:23) Shane Henry returned a Bobcat fumble 37 yards for another Midway touchdown. A failed try for two left the score Vikings 25 and Bobcats 0.

At 8:26 of the second quarter Shane Henry returned an interception 45 yards for a Viking touchdown. Aaron Whited kicked the point after to boost the score to Midway 32 and Drexel 0.

The next Midway score came at 4:02 of the second quarter as Dylan Beshore ran 12 yards for a Viking touchdown. Midway's extra point woes continued with another missed kick, leaving the score Midway 38 and Drexel 0.

Lane Hall picked-off a Drexel pass and returned it 31 yards for a Viking touchdown with 2:52 to play in the first half. Sam Riggs booted the point after to give the Vikings a 45-0 lead at halftime.

Midway's final score in the game came at 3:39 of the third quarter. Lane Hall scored on a 1 yard touchdown run, and Sam Riggs kicked the point after to make the final score Vikings 52 and Bobcats 0.

The Vikings had just 141 yards of total offense.

Cody Foreman completed his only pass 11 yards to Shane Henry for a touchdown. Shane Henry and Taylor Ayres each attempted 1 pass.

Lane Hall had 80 yards rushing on 9 carries. Sam Riggs had 14 yards rushing on 6 carries. Dylan Beshore had 12 yards rushing on 1 carry, and Jason Kurzweil had 10 yards rushing on 1 carry. Taylor Ayres netted 9 yards on 2 carries. Cody Foreman had 3 yards on 2 carries, and Josh Hague had 2 yards on 2 carries. Shane Henry had 0 yards on 5 carries.

Cody Foreman averaged 31.5 yards per kick on 10 kickoffs. He averaged 35.0 yards per punt on 2 punts.

The Viking defense yielded just 86 yards of total offense to the Bobcats.

Shane Henry, Lane Hall, and Taylor Ayres all had interceptions for the Vikings. Shane Henry, Cody Foreman, Lane Hall, and Ryan Minta all had fumble recoveries.

Midway got 3 solo tackles from Shane Henry. Cody Foreman and Lane Hall each had 2 unassisted tackles. Vikings with 1 solo tackle apiece were Kylen Roberson, Dylan Beshore, Beau Bollinger, Sam Riggs, Derek Worthley, and Michael Kelley.

Sam Riggs and Michael Kelley each assisted on 5 tackles. Beau Bollinger and Aaron Whited each assisted on 4 tackles. Daniel Canady and Shane Henry each assisted on 3 tackles.

Vikings with 2 assisted tackles were Lane Hall, Michael Lading, Kylen Roberson, Coty Nichols, and Dylan Beshore. Cody Foreman, Mitchell Miles, Josh Hague, Jason Kurzweil, and Ryan Minta each had 1 assisted tackle.

The Vikings will host Appleton City at Midway on Friday, September 5. The Bulldogs defeated Sherwood to open the 2008 season.

"Appleton City has a solid passing game, and the team is very athletic," said Coach Burchett. "We'll have to get our defense ready to pressure the passer and to cover the receivers. And, on offense, we'll have to block much better than we did last Friday."

Kickoff for the Appleton City/Midway game is at 7:00 PM.
